Founded in 1983 by Vermont glass artist Lucy Bergamini, Bergamini Beads is one of the earliest American makers of Venetian Cane Glass, which was first developed in Italy in the 1600s. Rods of colored glass are twisted and pulled by two glass blowers to 30 feet or more in length, then hand cut on a diamond saw and tumbled or fire polished to a high shine. Because of the complexity of this work, only a handful of American artisans endeavor to make this kind of bead.
As the third owner of this company, I continue the quality work that Lucy started 28 years ago. As a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design’s Textile Arts Program, the rich color of this glass attracted me and I bought the company in 2005. The focus of my creative endeavors is simple: to combine COLOR and SHAPE in aesthetically pleasing ways. Where I once did this with fabrics, I now work with glass.
Today, BB continues the tradition of hand-pulled, hand-cut bead making, offering a wide range of superior quality beads for wholesale and retail purchase. I also produce ever-changing lines of cane glass jewelry where I combine my beads with stone, sterling and various materials. Bergamini beads are known for their superior glass color and finish in a wide variety of cuts and sizes. Each Bergamini bead is a unique, little hand-worked piece of art and history. I welcome all inquiries for custom orders.
